9.30-11.00 Joanna Hoffmann Presentation A look at how an artist uses both science and imagination (fiction) in creating works,
Introduction to cosmologies, omphalos, Johannes Kepler, Harmonices Mundi, Theremin (first electronic musical instrument), brain wave scans, no-centredness resulting in body centredness, brain, the Macro and the Micro,

11.00-11.15 BREAK
11.15-1.00 Viewing the film The Illustrated Man including Ray Bradbury’s story The Veldt Three different sci-fi tales using different concepts enveloped by an overall concept. Identify the concepts and notice the treatment in both story and filmic forms.
2.00 pm – 3.00 pm Reading and discussion:
Ben Bova: The Future of Science: Prometheus, Apollo, Athena
Using the Mythic Metaphor to locate oneself with the flow of Science.
3.00 pm – 4 pm Submission of previous assignment and discussions on them. Establishing the variety of scientific concepts/spaces and linking sci-fi stories to them.
Assignment 1. Bring a presentation to class based on your research into the area in science/technology that you are particularly interested in – AI, Virtual Reality, Biology, Space, Interplanetary Travel, Viruses, Ecosystems, Time, Dimensionality, whatever.
